Default 'Noob' Exhaust Question...

OK, I am not too familiar with this topic. That is why I brought it to you specialists as I hope to get a clear and quick answer.

I am starting to price out exhausts for my 2003 SV650s. I have been looking at Hindle because I believe they are reputable. Also, we have an SVCup in Canada and all the SV's have Hindle exhausts so that must say something.

I have found a site in Canada that carries Hindle and I became confused. The site is a distributer called Dynamo Humm. This is the link to their Hindle exhausts for the SV. Here is Hindle's official website.

I am interested in a high mount. Now in the first table it lists:

2003 - Stainless Steel Front Exhaust Section (High Mount) - $560 CAD

Then in the next two tables it has Round and Oval Mufflers.

Mitch's Quiz For Dummies

Questions:

1. Is the first table the section of pipe that comes off each of the headers and joins. Then the Muffler is attached to that?

2. I imagine in order to get a highmount I'd need that part, Front Exhaust, in the first table?

3. What is the difference between Oval and Round Mufflers? Advantage to either one?

4. Difference in the 20" and 18" lengths? Advantage to either one? What is a standard length of pipe?

5. Difference between Stealth and Supersport? Is that the Canadian version of street and race cans?

6. Difference between Aluminum, Titanium, and Carbon? Advantages and disadvantages?

7. What would you recommend to me?

I am basically doing this for the sound. I mean, what member doesn't pressure another member to get right of their stock can on this site? Also, I am not trying to get more horsepower. I want that deep sound from my twins. I LOVE the highmount!!

Thank you SO very much for taking my exam. Your grades will be posted.

Mitch

You need to decide which type of end can you want. I prefer carbon myself, but the choice is down to how you want it to look.

Once you have made that decision, and seems you've already decided to go for a high level, you then need, in this case, to decide just:

1) Race or street can - Again I always go for race as they sound better, but don't know what the laws are in Moose land

2) Length - I'm not too sure what they mean but it could be the length of the end can, and again that will be down to how you want it to look, I'd propably go for the shorter option.

3) Oval or round - That's all about the look, I tend to go for oval...

Stainless has a shiny finish, Titanium has a matt look, carbon is, well just carbon really...

The exhaust may come with the option of replacement downpipes making it into a full system. If you go this route you may have to make adjustments to the way the engine breathes - change the air filter and the FI mapping.

Hope that helps.

Hey Jelster,

Thanks for the reply. I think I may have to contact Hindle myself and ask them some of those questions.

So am I correct in saying the top box is complete system? If I buy the muffler I am still not highmount... this is where I am confused slightly. Or do you suppose when you buy the can they supply the highmount link pipe? Thanks,

Mitch

If you buy and end can, that's what you get, a replacement can ("Muffler" in Moose speak). If you want to go with a high level you will need the HL link pipe.

I would expect Hindle, being in the racing game, to also be able to supply a full system, which comprises the front collectors (or downpipes) the end can and a link pipe.

You just need to decide which end can. With your bike I think the titanium oval would probably look better, but that's just my opinion.

OK, so is a link pipe seperate from the down pipes?

I don't think I want to go full system. I am liking the sound of oval and was steering away from carbon due to the look and price. Either Titanium or Aluminum if I feel cheap.

I think I would need a dealer to install the can for me aswell. Now, the hanger, I think it is called, depends on the company? I'd prefer to keep my passager pegs...

Thanks again Jelster,

Mitch

Hey,

I am beginning to wonder if Hindle's highmount is 'high' enough for my liking. Here is a picture from the SVCup I was referring to earlier:

None of the exhausts seem to highmount. I am looking for something like this:

Thanks,

Mitch

Off the subject but have you seen how the bloke second from top appears to have duck taped his face into the helmet Presume its to stop his visor misting, is there no end to the many uses of duck tape?!

What you'll find is that performance systems tend to be set about mid-level for better gas flow and greater ground clearance, the very high level ones require greater development to achieve clean gas flow, so are either more expensive or mainly for show.

I've tried the very high level link pipe , but end up melting my boot heel on it most of the time, I got Renegade to make me a custom link pipe (mid-level) to fit my M4 front pipework, sweet sound and good gas flow characteristics.

Cheers Mark.
