Default Good Bolt/Nut/Washer supplier?

Can anyone recommend any good, online, reasonably priced bolt etc. supplier?

I'd want to be able to be really specific about the size and length of not only the thread, but the type and size of connection on the head (eg 5mm alun key or 12mm hex, etc.)

Same with washers, particular hole size, thickness, whether they're a spring washer, material, etc.

I'd only want small quantities, one of each bolt etc. in some cases.

Am I being over-optomistic and are such things only available to companies buying 1000s of each one they specify?

Also, am I showing that I lack a proper 'man garage' with a wall full of little plastic boxes with all manner of bits and bobs in that I can just rummage through till I find something that fits?

Generally speaking, bolts and nuts come with a standard size head/socket dependant on the thread size, when there is a significant departure from these sizes, you can guarantee that the fixing in question is intended for a specific situation, so not available in all sorts of threads/lengths etc.
If you want small quantities I can't think of anyone web based who will be able to help, not saying you won't find them though, but if I'm after something rarely found in the available nuts 'n bolt tubs, I go to somewhere like Clerkenwell Screws (AKA Clerkenwell Nuts and Bolts), generally places like that can give a better choice of materials and finishes etc.

If it wins me any points back, I've told my girlfriend I flatly refuse to go halves on a place that doesn't have a garage.

Ta for the tip re: Clerkenwell screws.

for ease and convenience, "Screwfix" is worth a look. They don't have a very wide range of styles of fastener, but prices are OK usually and they are reputable and quick.

Similar to what SidSquid says, if I need particular items I use a place in Coventry called Kebrell's, but that's not much use to you I suspect. They are a friendly warehouse place, stacked floor to ceiling with every imaginable threaded thing.

Ta for all the suggestions folks

When I've got an evening free I'll measure up all the bits I need and then have a browse.

This is all for the seemingly simple job of fitting the taxdisc to the bike
