I only tend to this on the motoway when I have been following some numty for miles in the outside lane for miles and then wont move over to let me by.

If both inside lanes are clear I move right over to the inside lane and undertake

Yep. I try to make sure the left hand lane/hard shoulder are free, should the idiot finally decides to veer into the middle lane.

That said, occassionally around town (Like at lights) I'll fly up the inside (when I do this, I go v. quick, to minimise the time I'm alongside them). Again- if you can comfortably fit a bike there, it's poor lane discipline on their part, they're meant to leave metre/drain's distance from the kerb, not be driving along touching the centreline paint.

I constantly undertake on the motorway on my bike (not in my cage though, too underpowered to be able to accelerate out of trouble) and don't think twice about it if it's safe (I've even done it in view of the a couple of times, with no complaints). I suppose I really just wanted confirmation that it's normal to do so and that I'm not taking the michael.

I hate doing it, its illegal and highly dangerous (people seem to have enough difficulty looking over just one shoulder, two seems impossible) but I will if I have to

Let's be honest. If I'm riding in lane 1 and matey in his Golf is in lane 3 with nothing in front of him, and there's nothing in lane 2, why shouldn't I go past him ??

I remember being at Fleet services many years ago and the Police had a patrol car on display with a couple of officers chatting to the public;

Old bloke "What are you going to do about these drivers who keep coming past me in the inside lane"

Copper "Surely sir, if your lane disipline is correct they shouldn't be able to come past you on the inside"

Old bloke "But I'm generally doing 70 MPH"

Copper "In the middle lane with nothing in lane 1? I think you'll find that is considered driving without due care & attention sir"

He shut up and walked off.....

Always do it on the motorway. Without thinking now i've been doing it so long. I also do it quite a lot on the A roads where there's enough room for me to nip round the car in front.
