well i just got insured with carole nash and they said if i buy a datatool system 3 from them for 300, they will give me 140 off my policy which i can use to pay partly for the alarm. they said they had set the scheme up due to the increase in thefts.

I guess they dont want people to claim! im sure they r making a small amount of money on the alarms, i bought one for 250 before. But i think their reasons may be genuine.

they also come to ur house and fit the alarm. and get this, they give u a refund on the alarm if ur bike is nicked!

Obviously there are no small prints with regards to this

I had a System 3 on my Duke, didnt stop it from getting nicked. Have same on the SV though. Was thinking of getting a tracker (www.uktracking.com), but most insurance companies dont seem to even know what a tracker is let alone offer a discount for it! Anyone has got somethinglike this, is it worth it?

I've heard of a company that does bike tracking - do a google search for "bike tracking" - but police were so understaffed they never got to the van/workshop before the bike got moved. They ended up employing ex army/whatever guys to go there as soon as they got a fix and "persuade" the guys to part with the bike and hand themselves over to the police. It's not cheap - figure on £500+ for the install then a couple of hundred quid a year subscription. Only person I know with one has it on his Subaru and has lots of spare cash to pay for it.

Never bothered with alarms but the SV I just bought has a datatool 3. Bennetts will give me about £25 off for having it (£175 instead of £200 for 3pft). I doubt it will do much good - anyone setting it off will probably be a completely innocent bystander or a crim with the know how to knock it out. Wouldn't ever buy an alarm unless it was for a sportsbike, and then only because the premium would be much more hefty without it.

Thanx for the advice SVeedy. My boss has Tracker on all his cars, Maserratti, Ferraris and SLR, we bought them for about £400 and its about £125 subscription pa. I am not too bothered about cost the ones I've seen are around same price. I was more interested with knowing whether it would be easy to find the bike in case it was stolen. As I said I had Datatool on my Ducati and it still got nicked, neighbours called the police and they didnt bother to come "they would be gone by teh time we get there" was the answer.
