hi guys,
i've got a carbed raptor 650 for a while now, and have put on race exhausts (G&G, italian brand, 52 mm diameter WHOW!), and a K&N filter (reuseability). The ride is fenomenal, 1000 better than my TL1000, and than my former SV650S ever was, BUT powerwise it's not very good at the moment. I have loads of grunt untill 5k rpm, but after that it quickly dies. I think i lost 20hp somewhere along the line. It tops out at 170 kph, while it should be doing at least 210. No, it's not restricted. The airbox is identical to the SV one. I have ordered a jetkit to make things work a bit better and i hope it will. Any thoughts from you guys with carbed SV's? I searched a bit, but there's too much info to filter through sorry. Has anybody cut the snorkel out of their K&N filters with good results? Should i get a bit more air doing this? thanks alot! W. ![]() here's a few piccies just because ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

You need that jetkit. With twin 52mm pipes and the K&N the bike is breathing (and sounding :P ) much better. Im pretty sure it's fuel starvation.
Don't go cutting the filter up. It's already optimised for use with race cans unlike the original which is much more restrictive to suit the stock can. The jetkit has a selection of replacement jets to suit different stages of tune, if possible get it dyno'd by a pro to sort out the problem. Carbs are sometimes a pain, but when they are working nicely.... ![]() |

thanks haggis! i was hoping that would be the problem. It runs just a tad better with a desnorkeled stock filter, so i thought for some time that there would actually be not enough air flowing through the K&N!
Those exhausts are indeed more than big enough (bigger than my TL exhausts, 50mm), (the sound is unbelievable though, it sounds better than the TL ![]() hopefully the kit will be here tonite, can't wait to start fiddling with her ![]() thanks Amanda, your bike ain't too shabby either...i am soo dreaming of a raptor 1000 but i'll never get enough money of my TL to buy one...oh well, i'll live for now ![]() ![]() |

That's a really nice bike there... But where to start with your problem?
As you've probably worked out, you're lean at the top end- probably to possibly you should consider not riding it, if you're losting that much power. The cheap fix would be bigger jets, not sure what would be right with your setup though. Costs around £3 for a pair. Then either shim or move the clip on your needles (don't know if Raptors have the UK or US needles). Not quite as good a s ajet kit but far cheaper. As for the K&N, IMO it's not the best filter for our bikes- definately nothing like as good as the BMC Race RS if it's power you're after. Conveniently JHS Racing sell a Stage 2 jet kit which includes the Race RS filter and it's designed for use with a full system- not cheap at £150 (IIRC) but it would save you a lot of setup time and work. K&Ns get very variable results with the desnork, apparently. If you do decide to get a jet kit, and not the JHS one, don't get the Dynojet Stage 1 kit- very expensive for little gain. The Stage 1&3 kit is better but still not great, as the jets provided are a pretty dubious mix and the instructions are poor. I wish I'd gone with JHS or Factory Pro for mine...

If you can ignore the muppets in the silly hats this is what a Raptor 650 *should* look like
![]() ![]() Your best bet would be a BMC Race RS filter and JHS Dynojet kit. That's what I've got fitted to mine and it is awesome! Try www.jhsracing.co.uk which is where I got mine. I get 72 hp and could quite easily get more by removing the noise baffles from the cans and going up a couple of jet sizes but then I'd be *way* over the power limit for the MiniTwins race series. |

damn that raptor looks awesome,
how's she doing in the minitwins series? (i followed them a few years back when renegade was participating with their SV650) i already ordered the K&N 1-3 jetkit, so no JHS or renegade for me (should have thought of it though), and the K&N filter was just about the only option here in belgium. You don't know how many dealers/shops i visited, just to get some main jets or a BMC filter...there's really poor choice around here. (waited 4 months to get bigger mikuni jets, and then the shop tells me they will not give them to me seperately! - they want to do the work - aaarrrgl) (the needles are to be shimmed by the way ![]() |

I hope you are going to get everything set up on the dyno to make sure you aren't running lean once everything is done. |
