Default Gearbox jamming... anyone know of faults on a SV650s

Anyone ever heard of a known gearbox fault on 2002 SV650s?
I took the bike out for a ride, at the first set of lights i couldn't find neutral, 5 minutes later on the motorway the bike jumped into neutral for a second whilst i was in 5th gear and jumped back into 5th gear (was doing 70 mph at the time), i took the next exit and as i dropped down the gears the rear wheeel locked up and threw me off the bike. when i lifted it the gearbox was jammed and wouldn't find neutral again.
i took the bike to get repaired and was told it was the sprocket and chain so i had them replaced. 60 miles after picking up the bike the chain snapped!

Anyone know of any history like this or do i have a dud bike?

Wow! Get it to a dealer sharpish. I take it you brought i second hand, privatly?

Not finding neutral is sometimes attributed to too much oil. Yours sounds like a clutch or deffo a gearbox fault!

Sounds like a knackered and very very loose chain, which should have been checked before riding it. Sorry you've had this bad experience but it doesn't sound like the gearbox and I agree with Viney that too much oil can make the gearbox stiff and awkward to use.

i did buy it second hand and it was the dealer i bought it from that did the repairs as well.

I had not topped up the oil before riding it so i don't think it could be too much oil.

i can't understand the new chain snapping after the repair and full service.

In that case I'd be back to the dealer, politley but very firmly, demanding that he pays for the new chain, sprockets, repairs and also gives you an ex-gratia payment for you falling off and the trouble you've been through. Maybe contacting your local Trading Standards Office first would be a good step.

Sounds to me like a worn selector fork or worn dogs on the gears themselves. I reckon the gearbox locked and broke your new chain with the shock of the sudden lockup. Was it a cheapish chain ie TripleS or something? That would be more prone to snapping than say a DID. You can pretty much eliminate the chain and sprockets as the cause as it did it on the old and new set. Gearbox wear like this is often caused by badly executed clutchless shifting or a novice rider riding with their foot constantly resting on the gear lever. Get it back to the dealer, they are obliged to repair it or give you a refund (depending how long ago you bought it). Let us know how it goes

Was this problem resolved eventually. I have just bought a used engine for my 2002 SV which seem to have the same problem. I can only select 3 gears but this is erratic and most of the time it is just not possible to select gear. The gearbox is jammed and even with the clutch in, the rear wheel locks. It is so bad that when you start up and let the clutch out, the engine stalls. The seller said he would refund £100 if I want to repair the engine or give me a full refund if I take it back. No sure which way to go as these engines seem to be hard to come by.
