if like me your a bit of a performance junkie then its one of those things you wont be able to leave out cos itll get you that extra little bit thats just waiting to be opened up, but if you jut wanna nice bike that goes pretty fast then no its not really worth doing. If you just ride day to day normal style then i'd only get an air filter upgrade if i had an aftermarket full system, then you'd have to get it remapped anyway. to get the best performance out of your bike you need to remap after each and every change you make to it, change the filter=remap, change the exhaut=remap, etc etc. hope that helps.
in answer to your question, yes it will give you a reasonably significant boost in power. 3 brake would be an increase of about 3%, which is always nice. where this boost will end up being placed i dont know exactly (probably somewhere higher up the rev range) but it'll give you a few extra miles an hour and should make getting up speed that little bit easier (and i do mean LITTLE bit extra). The main things that'll get you more top end are a good aftermarket exhaut system (preferably dyno-develoed) and a good quality filter (BMC or somthing), new lines and plugs, oil and filter upgrade and a good remap with powercommander and about 4 hours of dyno time from a qualified dyno setup. after that you can tart to mes about with final drive ratios and gear ratios and all maner of internal engine components but the above mentioned are the basic mods that people tend to do. hope that helps TRICK |

Totally agree there... Can, filter and tuning are a pretty expensive way of getting not much power. You do get better engine response and a broader power peak as well, so you can't just look at it in terms of peak gain- but still, I'd say unless you plan other tuning don't bother. (this, because other mods will be held back by the stock exhaust and filter, IMO) Especially if you're going to have to go through pros to get it fitted- a new exhaust system, filter, jet kit and set up work can run you towards a grand!
Having said that, I got a used jet kit, filter and system for just over £300 and did the install and setup myself. It wants dyno fine-tuning but at that price it makes a little more sense.

most cost effective mod would have to be further training.

Nah, like has been said, spend it on suspension. Also, you're missing an "a" out of your sig

Stewie,
Looking at your avatar pic I gather you already have a pipe fitted to the bike. Since I don't know if you've already fiddled with the suspension I'll leave that one but as you would know the forks are the greates limitng factor with the SV650. Back to jetting/filter. If you're going to do it don't go 1/2 arsed. A stage 2 kit is very good and still quite useable every day. If you purchase a jet kit then you'll be looking at quite a few $$ but fortunately there are those of us out there that have done the groundwork so you can purchase the required bits on the cheap and put them together from our research. Righto, first here is a graph from my bike, the bottom curve is std with just a pipe. The middle curve is after fitting a jet kit. ![]() As you can see quite clearly that's an extra 9hp at the rear, or something around 17%. The settings and parts I've used are contained in the 'adjusting needles' thread and as stated provide you with a starting point at least. Shop around for parts and there is usually some place or other having a sale on filters or something so you can save some $$ there. Just take note of the part numbers as this, especially with the filter, makes a huge difference. |

jets & exaust don't gain you much peak, BUT is does smooth out the flat spots and gives you gains throught the power curve that are much more noticable low & midrange in the revs
is it worth it? besides intitial cost, also consider the 10-15% loss in fuel economy |
