Has anyone tried these new mobile alert systems yet? This one from MST is £199 plus £29 a year ( www.bikeguard.co.uk ) Tracker is way too expensive so I've been looking at these text message alarms systems, basically they send you a text message to your phone when the alarm goes off. Not sure if they are worth it

Ok Just phoned Bikesecure ( very good company for fitting ground archors, did my work last year ) then Datatool after bikesecures recommendstion. Datatool have just bought the rights to bikeguard they will be doing their own version and it will be out in 2 weeks plus on show at the NEC
But if it's anything like what they said about their system four at the Nec then it will be atleast a year

they said 2 weeks then too

So the point don't buy bikeguard because their warranty won't mean poo

Sounds good but wouldn't the bike be gone already if it took 10 or 15 mins to get back to the bike?

True but the £29 a year is for a tracking service where you give them a call and they can give you an area location of your bike if nicked, as long as they area they give you is not like a 10mile radius

When (if) I change my bike next yr I will have tracker on. Had one nicked last yr, only had her for 3 weeks and won't risk it again.

unless the bike has been stuck in a metal box, then they get no signal and cannot give you a location.

rural areas give them big problems as well.

invest in some more heavy chains

An alternative strategy would be to get hold of an oldish Pay as You GO mobile, wire it into the bike's battery (so it never needs recharging), and hide it somewhere in the bike where it won't be seen e.g. the tail section. Then use the FindMobile system to find out where your bike is if it gets stolen:

(It won't allow direct linking, so go to the Mobile tab at the top of the page and then the FindMobile link)

The advantages are that there's no annual premium and it'll only cost you a quid for the answer

Maybe I'm being pessimistic here, but if your bike was stolen and you could tell the police roughly where it was would they rush out to follow up straight away?
Or more likely would the thieving scum have found the phone/black box/ whatever before the police followed it up, ditched it and moved on.
Or of course you could go try find the bike yourself, but that isn't a smart idea if like me you're not that hard.
