Hi
My bike doesnt seem to want to idle on the choke properly when its cold first thing in the morning. I'll start it up with full choke, and it fires and runs for maybe two or three seconds and then the rev's drop off from say 3000rpm to about 1500rpm. It hunts and the idle speed is not steady. Then it'll give what I can only describe as the sort of noise a cat makes when it sneezes, or sometimes a sound almost like a cough / splutter it'll do this once maybe twice and once its done that it'll on the choke fine and once its warmed up it will idle OK. I've got the idle speed set at approx 1200rpm doesnt seem to matter if I turn this up a little though it still does it. I had some problems with my front spark plug getting wet a while ago which I fixed with a fenda extenda. I am confident that I have refitted the HT lead properly. Also it pops like anything on the over run and also pops when its idling. However I dont think the clamp on the link pipe is done up quite right or I havent got a good seal as sometimes I've noticed condensation coming out from under the clamp and running down the link pipe a little. I think the popping on overun is being cauesd by air bleeding back into the exhaust. So I am going to take the can off and seal it with some silicone and sort that out. As for the idling problem, I'm thinking any of these. 1. Dodgy choke cable not returning problem and its running to rich 2. Dodgy HT lead getting damp overnight ? 3. Condensation on the Electrode of the plug. I know the symptoms of a blown head gasket I had a nova for a few years and it went through several. Is the SV know to blow head gaskets, ( I cant recal anybody complaining about this ) I wandered if the electrode on the plug was getting damp overnight and this is whats causing the weird idling problem. It does this even if the bikes been garaged overnight. thoughts, suggestions ideas appreciated thanks Fizz

Mine used to/still does that if its really cold. I just start it and let it sort itself out.
Id probably look at change the choke cable as the 1st port of call. |

I had that happen to mine at the start of the year. Somtimes it would stall a couple seconds after starting. I put it down to fuel level in the carbs i thought, the choke dumping too much fuel in . Not a problem realy. Not sure about my answer either.

Mine's always done similar things, pretty sure it's due to low fuel level in the float bowls after evaporation following leaving it when hot. It's more significant if it hasn't been run for a good while, which fits the theory.
There's enough fuel around to supply the enrichment/choke circuits for a few seconds, and it's just a question of whether the pump fills the float bowls quickly enough to "catch up" before it stalls. As long as it recovers and runs properly when it's settled down, don't worry. ![]() |
