Default Do it up by hand

Hi

I was a mechanic for many years. To put the new filter on, smear some oil on the seal and then tighten by hand until it takes you a bit of effort to get it to move. Don't force it. Never use a tool to fit it. you may overtighten it and damage the seal. You may also have major trouble getting it off in 6 months time!

To get the old one off, try using your hand first. If it won't move punch a screwdriver through it or buy a removal tool.

If you need to buy a removal tool check out the results of the search link below:

This is a really good site for all sorts of tools.

Its its like any-other O ring then making it to tight can make it worse not better. I've never actually faced that problem on a bike but my home brew beer went flat once and my regulator leaked (SUCBA) due to over tightening

For info. Flat home brew is nasty but lemonade can save it.

And keep an eye on it every month or so..... I say this because last week my oil filter SPLIT after only 6000 miles !!!!! Oil everywhere..... luckily I was at some traffic lights in Manchester city centre so noticed before any damage could have happened. 5 more minutes and I'd have been on the motorway... dread to think. I've never heard of this happening before, on a car or bike, but the breakdown recovery guy said it's starting to happen more and more. So just keep an eye on it !!!
