Ive been using heated grips through the winter
35 miles each way two or three times a week. Put the battery on a optimate probably twice a week. Today I did about 200 miles When trying to restart after a fuel stop I got a typical flat battery response from the starter. With the grips off there was just enough to start up. finished the journey without the grips and put the battery on charge when I got home. (Its a 9 month old battery) The question is - would this be normal or am i looking at a charging problem? Any thoughts |

there is plenty of juice from a properly operating electrical system to power heated grips on the SV.
sounds like your RR might only be working intermittently and not charging your battery |

Still, it's a very good idea to have the grips wired into an ignition-switched live if you've not already. Take your example here= if you stop the bike and go in for petrol, and they're not ignition switches, they're constantly drawing power. Not a huge amount, but it could be enough.
I went a wee bit further when I did my epic rewire a few months ago, and put my relay for the grips into the headlight circuit. Now, my heated grips are on and off with the lights. If I'm ever dubious about the state of the battery, I can kill the 2 big, disposable power drains- the grips and the lights- with a single flick of a switch. Quite handy when starting from cold etc. Not brain surgery obviously, but it's kind of nice to have.

Northwind;
The grips are wired in to the ignition, using the spare way on the fuse box. ![]() (courtesy of a post on here - thanks) I do like the idea of being able to turn the lights off for cold starts though. I'll fit a switch inside the fairing next time it comes off. ![]() Cheers. |
