It works great in the US. I remember when i was in LA a few years back that the car share lane went a totaly different route to the main highway, apprently cutting 4 miles out of the journey. Imagine, something like the M6Toll be a car share only type road/Lane, that kind of idea. Not sure if they are open to bikes though, which would also be good.

FWIW, i think its a great idea.

Does anyone know if bikes will be allowed to use these lanes? Would you need a pillion?

They should be. And they certainly shouldn't need pillions to qualify if it's a mono seat bike. Thank goodness for Suzuki's quick change seat cowl/pillion seat.

the one in leeds is rubbish... they use a road that has so many different junctions of it ppl use it who are going in a million differnet dierctions...

at the end of the day it just cause conjestion in the lane that take single user cars..

Only good if bikes can use it too! And open up bus lanes more for us!

God this is a disturbing statistic from an eco point of view:
"during rush hour periods, 84 percent of vehicles using the M62 and M606 motorways on this stretch had only one occupant"

Slightly off topic, but has the M4 bus lane changed the world?

They've put a bus lane on the dual carriageway I use to get to work (bikes can use it but I mostly commute in the cage). It's only about 2 miles long, and doesn't avoid the worst of the traffic. I think they'd have been better spending the money improving the local road system as a whole, rather than a measly 2 mile bus lane.

Just my £0.02
