Greetings all.
My first post on the forum, but I've been reading on here for a while. Finally found a reason to sign up, unfortunately, its due to a slight issue with my recently purchased curvey SV650. Anyhow, its been smoking a bit lately, I thought nothing of it a few days ago when I noticed, just put it down to sitting at approx 95mph+ for about 100 miles with a pillion. I was checking the tyre sizes earlier to order a new set and thought I'd fire her up since it'd been a few days. I swear that thing is trying to immitate my Aprilia RS125! Its smoking, quite a lot. After a few minutes, it cleared up and seemed to burn a fair bit cleaner, not as smelly either. The bike itself is on just short of 20,000 miles and is fitted with a road legal CCC can. My friend (the previous owner) tells me that the valve clearences were adjusted at 16,000 miles, but they seem to be very loud. Is it a common SV or V twin problem to become a bit smokey? I've been an Inline4/2-stroke person up until the purchase of the SV, so still have plenty to learn. Is it possible the valves need adjusting, that oil could be seeping through into the cylinders? The smoke is blue, so its definitely oil. The coolant level is fine. The bike is booked in for a complete service, and I mentioned to the mechanic about the smoke, but he said he couldnt say a cause until he's seen it. Said its most likely to be the valves. Thought this is a good place to ask. I used the search a few times but couldnt find anything worthwhile. Thanks in advance for any help. ![]() Regards, Keith. |

Is the noise a rattling sound? if it is it could be a cam tentioner failed a common fault with the curvey.

It does sound like bad news but try checking your airbox for oil. There is a breather pipe that blows excess oil up to the airbox if you overfill the sump or do too many wheelies.Check your oil level too as overfilling could cause your problem.

![]() I fired her up earlier and she wasnt smoking, a bit smelly, but nothing to worry about. I'll start with the easy things like the airbox, let the mechanic do the rest. Anyway, thanks for the welcome, I'm sure I'll be floating about a canny bit. ![]() Regards. |
