Default anyone own a vectra

My last 3 cars have all been Mondao's and I am due a change

My choice is somewhat limited. To the Ford, Puegot and Vauxhall range.

I am definately not into the small car so looks like Mondao, 407 or Vectra. and then my choices are limited

So do I go for : -

Mondao 2.0 Ghia TDCI 130 (Again) or Zetec S
Pug 407 SW 2.0 SE (Appears to be lacking)
Vectra 2.2 SRI

OK guys, which do I go far. Ladies what colour?

I don't own one, but I've driven a few Vectras and Mondeos. I prefer the Vectra myself. As long as you're not expecting "fun" you won't be disappointed. Whilst the gearbox is better than the smaller Vauxhalls (corsas, astras, etc.) it's still not brilliant, but other than that, no real gripes. A good motorway car.

Chap in work has one which has been tastefully modified (debadged, irmscher matt black grill and lowered suspension) and it looks excellent. He also reckons firming the suspension up makes it a lot more sporty and really transforms the car.

You'll never go wrong with a Ford or Vauxhall..

Personally, I'd have the Mondeo TDCI. But I haven't had 3 already, like you!!

Give the SRi a go. You may find the indicators a pain. If you touch them they flash 3 times, like if your changing lanes, but try knocking the other way to cancel and it flashes 3 times the other way......

A friend of mine was in a similar position and much preferred the Mondeo - I guess your best bet is to try them both....

I have the previous shape 2.2 SRi and think it's a great car. It's happy to cruise at 3 figures, roomy enough to get the family in and I like the shape etc. The 2.2 is quite torquey, it's not match for for BMW330, but it's built relatively well. It also give a fairly firm ride, which I prefer.

I am considering down sizing actually, so the new Focus ST is sitting at the top of my list. In the Mondeo stakes, the ST220 is a nice motor, but a fair few quid more expensive...

Oi, nowt wrong with the small box range on the corsas etc. Short ratio boxes like the F13, F15 etc are great boxes, very very rare they go wrong and interchangeable (bar small block and large block engines).

The Veccy is a good cheap reliable car. If its the new shape, i'd say go for the 1.9 CDTi 150bhp version. LOADS of torque on it. If its the older shape, the 2.2 or V6 are the best to go for, the V6 is the better lump, but its not amazing. Drinks juice though when the right foot gets heavy.

The 2.2 16v is a good engine, but its got less power and a lot less torque than the CDTi version. Still, the 2.2 has got 150bhp and 150lb ft of torque (the CDTI will have morelike 250lb ft).

unfortunately the lease company my employers use, do not appear to offer the ST variants, probably because resale values are low as it is naturally assumed the performance has been tested.

I could if willing to make a contribution (No, it is a tool and I begrudge paying tax on something I need to do my job) get the 136PS variants of the pug. The Vectra is supposed to put out 155 whilst the Mondao is about 130.

I know it is not all about power, I really want handling, stiffer suspension, better brakes etc That a higher perfomance car should bring.

Edit
Just done some tax calcs and it works out about £120 a year cheaper for me to get the 19.Cdti Sri even though the list price is £1300 more. ok diesel costs abit more but I should get better consumption.

The SRi "should" have fairly stiff suspension, mine does.

I was looking for a new motor recently and the Vectra SRi was on the shortlist.
Didn't actually test drive one but they get good writeups in the handling stakes
