Hiya
Did anyone see Brooke's post on the London Bikers forum re going side to side to warm up tyres? She got pulled over by plod and was given a telling off. The consensus was that swishing does not warm tyres up and is all a bit pointless. I thought however it did help by flexing tyre walls. Does anyone have a clear logical answer on this? Ta |

It won't make a great deal of difference in terms of heat, but it can be handy for cleaning off the tyres.

One of the bike mags (maybe Bike) tested this a few years back.
They used thermometers and tested the temp of tyre carcasses under different conditions. The upshot was that doing the old side to side thing had no demonstrable warming effect! GP gods still do it though, but I s'pose they are very different types of tyres |

braking and accelleration is what warms them up - front and rear respectively.
Going from side to side only warms me up - not my tyres. ![]()

As Michael says, it only cleans the tyres & doesn't warm them up.
However, I usually do it in the morning when setting off as it gives me a chance to squirm about in the seat, stretch legs (perhaps that should be leg ![]() I can imagine that anyone following would think WTF ![]() ![]() |

Yes another urban myth, side to side weaving won't make an ounce of difference in the real world. But as Carsick says, it does help to clean some crap off the sides of the tyres if you've been through some muck etc. It's also certainly not illegal to weave like this, providing of course you're doing it sensibly and riding with the correct degree of care and attention. Naturally if plod sees you it's almost guaranteed they're going to give you a tug.

Sometimes it can be a 'boredom' thing..
When you're limited to slower speeds and can't overtake cos of cars/cameras etc.. Just a bit of play to 'while' the slowness away!! ![]() |

Better off accelarating and then hard braking as this increases friction which increases heat.
