HELP, suspect gearbox

Hi was out for a ride today and third gear suddenly starts making a horrible clicky noise that can also be felt throught the gearlever, all the other gears work fine and allow me to accelerate and engine brake hard. The nosie is worst during engine braking but i'm not sure if this is due to the decreasing enigne nosie or not.

I have just had the cylinder head covers off to do the valve clearances, is there any chance that i could have dropped something down into the gearbox? I'm 99.9% sure this hasn't happened.

I have also had a few gears pop out recently after a second or two of full power, i thought this was down to lazy shifting but could this have been the beginging or a major failure.

Is this serious and how much will it be to approx to fix?

The noise only seems to happen when the engine is braking or under a neutral throttle and it makes no difference if the engine is off or on.

I tried driving with an open throttle, closed throttle and engine off at 10mph in first second and third and the noise only appears in third do i doubt it the chain hitting the chassis.

dunno, id say check simple things first, like clutch adjustment, chain tension, but sounds like you know more than me - so i wont bore you with the usual

Your comments make sense but the chain is about right. I'm thinking that chain/clutch problems would occur in all gears or at least low or high gears and not specifically 3rd.
