It CAN look good..................but I've seen many bikes with really cack, badly-applied, wonky wheel rim tape on them.................and that looks absolutely terrible

It's 'sticky tape' fer 'evans sake.
 :P Either polish 'em or paint 'em but dont resort to sticky tape. Although the word 'rim' is still childishly funny.
