My setup on my 10Mb Telewest cable is a 5 port gigabit vpn firewall (Netgear Prosafe FVS124G) which gives me AES256bit encryption vpns into a number of networks I support. My development servers and docking station for the laptop are then run off gigabit ports, I then have a 2mb connection into a 24 port switch giving me connectivity to my printers, accesspoints, telephones etc which only have 100Mb connectivity and are therefore not worth connecting into a gigabit switch.
I have two access points motorola 840G's one in the loft and the second in the gazebo in the garden to give me as much coverage as possible. TBH the daughter and a friend accross the road use the WiFi a lot more than I do. Normally I only use WiFi for my PDA. or if on those rare occassions that the sun shines and I want to work from the garden. My own personal recommendations are:- Don't use a wireless access point to front your system. Get a proper firewall and put the access point off that. Use the strongest encryption you can on your wireless. don't use an RFC1918 addresing scheme, pick a random public address, it don't matter as your NAT firewall will convert it anyway. Enforce MAC restrictions, get rid of any make identification in the wireless SSID. and change the default password.
