Default gearbox not selecting gear correctly.

Hi all,

I am asking this question for my brother, he has a curvy SV650 naked 1999 and no Internet to ask this question.

He selects 1st gear and starts to release the clutch and apply power to pull away and then the gear clunks home and rides fine until the next gear change.

Into 2nd, release the clutch with some power, clunk gear engages and rides fine.

Happens going up or down the box and happens hot or cold, its as if the gear will not select correctly until power is put through it. (if you know what I mean)

Any ideas as to where to start looking and what to take apart and clean and put back on??

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I get the same issue basically, but only when 'box changing' down from 6th. It wont engage the gear properly (and let me go down another) until the gear I just selected is engaged properly.

I'm just working on the assumption that it's designed that way to stop you going down too many gears. Damn annoying until I got used to it though. Happened since it rolled out of the dealership brand new.

He is not even 'box changing' this is just going between gears.

Changing from 3rd to 4th, no click/clunk when pressing the gear lever although gear selector returns to normal position, then only once power/drive/load is there does the gear finally engage with the tell-tail click/clunk.

Only just starting doing this and not done it before.

Check the basics first.Chain tension/condition and lube.Engine oil level(too low or high)and does it need changing?Gear lever lube where it pivots on the footrest. These corrode and get sticky and can cause all sorts of selection trouble.Only when you have done all that should you begin to panic about the internals.

Oil change finished and gear lever has now got lube all over it.

It has cured the problem, amazing that oil stuff!!

Thanks for your help.
