Default part x sv650s for honda vtr 1000 ?

Hi ,

My 06 sv is in for a service today , its in good condition & has 13 k miles

As you do ,had a look round and noticed a honda vtr1000 , did not take it out for a ride as no time , however sat on it , fit really plush & comfortable .
The bike is over priced its a 2002 with 9 k & they want 3995 , you can get a 2001 model with the same miles for 2995 , they offered 2750 - 3000 part x for my sv .
The only problem with the Storm is the mpg , I commute 50 miles a day & beleive the tank range is sub 100 , which is a real shame , as apart from this it looks spot on .

Any Honda Vtr owners past / present got any heads up on the VTR ? Esp mpg , reliablity ( I've heard the cam chain tensioners are a known problem , in fact the garage had a 10 k mileage bike where the tensioner has failed & had wrecked the engine !

Cheers Steve

Cam chains and tensioners. Hondas achilles heel. Hence why the VFR750 used a solid cam drive system.

Why go for the VTR?. Better, more interesting V twins out there IMO

The 3 bikes I had thought of , were firestorm , sv1000s , aprillia falco .

I liked the idea of Honda build quality & as I use it daily needs to be comfy , also as the Firestorm has been around for a while & appears not to be popular , was hoping to pick a good one cheap !
The sv1000 would have the same build quality as the sv650 ?
I know very litte about Aprillia Falco's , however could be a bit too focused for daily use ?

To be honest for what I use it for the sv650s is spot on , its just nice to have a change now & again .

Cheers Steve

the sv1000 makes a good commute bike especially if your crunching motorway miles, you would have to keep ontop of the finish tho.

Actually it was the Falco I was thinking of.

The build quality is superb. Much better than a Suzy. Stonking engine.

But I guess in your price range there isn't much else.

Like you say the 650 ticks all the boxes and I assume your the only owner so know it well, so try and keep it.

What about hiring a bike for the weekend?

Yeah, I thought that... Then I got fed up of it eating batteries and not starting on cold mornings... So fed up I p/x'ed for a GSXR600....

It's a beast of a bike when it's running, when it's not, it's a can of sh1te....

All litre twins drink petrol - you won't find one that'll give you much more than 110 to a tank (unless it's got a big tank). Ridden hard the Falco would give me about 80, commuting 95-100. The Falco is very comfortable though...

Do I miss it ? Yes, would I have another ? Only if I had 2 or 3 other bikes as well....

Firestorm was a great bike, it's very old now, the SV is probably the best of the bunch these days.

Yes, rose tinted glasses I suppose. But all Aprilia twins seem to be cursed with a underachieving battery. Didn't find the tank range that bad though. Can't have been riding it hard enough.Lol.

So I dunno. Maybe a VTR after all. The SV thou leaves me cold. But that crappy VTR tank range????

Glad I'm not in this quandry.

My curvey sits outside under a cover and has no fur, it's covered in oil and grease, which maybe protects it
Or pointys rust more than the original and best models?

The VTR looks well dated, that single headlight looks well old innit.
