Its not about NEED its about WANT ...

I want to be a millionaire ... but I don't NEED to be ... as I am not a millionaire, I like to do the odd thing to make me feel a bit that way ... like say buy a 'quality' shirt rather than a Tescos value one (or whatever) for a change ...

All red blooded men want to feel we are head of the pride, V-Rossi (et all) if you like are the 'Alfa-biker' if you will. We aren't, so we try and emulate him ... its a way of saying "Ok, so I am no Rossi yet, but look I am on my way to being king of the pride ... I can stand taller than you ... or at least I can catch a small gazelle - I could be king one day, can you?" ...

If you haven't got a w1lly you wouldn't understand ...

In summery, its a 'p1ssing contest', thats all!!

This is a very considered an safe approach to riding, and totally proper, but don't you ever want to break from functional riding and hoon around a bit (without being unduly dangerous or rowdy!)?If you have been round a roundabout already you know the condition of the surface, can see any dangers, so its down to what you may see as acceptable risk. If you normally get your knee down then the perception of danger is gone.

As Blue says, its more than needing to get it down, its being able to, it is an achievement not everyone can do. I bit like Ronaldo's step-overs, not always required but fun to do!

Have you done any trackdays? I bet once you have had your knee scrapping aound Druids you'll want to on the road but only where safe of course!

to be a little bit more constructive than my p1ssing contest statement

Its seen as a benchmark. If you aspire to be a fast rider then kneedown is one of the first goals you simply have to achieve.

Your into equestrianism right? (seem to remember from another thread in the past) ... why do you what to trott over walk? and canter (or is it gallop the fastest?!?!? ) over trott? You don't need to, you can get there just the same walking ... but it's seen as the next level to trott, then canter ... and you can never class yourself as a true horse rider if you can't get a canter ... besides cantering is more fun

As a canterer - You would scoff a little at those who can never move beyond say a trott ...

Errm... my eldest daughter Caz (Gixer 600 K6 and '04 R6 trackbike) and my ex-girlfriend (Daytona 600) regularly get their knees down on the road. From what I remember of changing Caz's nappies, she doesn't have a willy and my ex most certainly doesn't

It's not all a ****ing contest, the actual hanging off the bike to keep the bike more upright to maintain a greater contact patch between tyre and tarmac is relevant, but I agree that putting a knee slider down is a bit of showing off. It's almost mandatory if you're that far off the bike though - you can't go to the beach and just walk along the sand, you have to get your feet wet.

Not getting your knee down is like buying a surfboard and only paddling it up and down your local swimming baths, or having a Page 3 model for a girlfriend and never seeing her topless.

You have probably seen videos where people get their knee down in a car park at 15 miles an hour. That is just getting your knee down for knee downs sake.

I had a DVD that came with my last bike in which James Toseland said he had never had his knee down on the road and didn't think there was any reason why you should.

In my opinion a lot of people getting their knee down on the road are doing it for the sake of it and could take the turns at the same speed without getting their knee down.

If they are going genuinely fast enough to warrant it then in my opinion they are riding in a silly manner. Half of them only get their knee down when riding around and around and around and around a roundabout on an empty industrial estate on a Sunday morning. That is just mickey mouse, they don't actually do it in real world riding.

Even in the TT the riders are not scraping their knees along the floor in every corner like a MotoGP rider so if Joe Public is doing it on open roads...
