Default Computer help - wifi router

Help please!
Just even trying to get my head round this is difficult
The internet's working fine with a usb modem, but want wifi in the house. So sent off for my free Fonera wifi router, & now got my free ethernet cable modem from Tiscali.
So I imagine I plug my Fon in the modem, the modem into the phone line & I should have wifi internet. Only I've not put my username & password into anything so why would it work? (which it doesn't) All the wireless devices in the house can find the signal but it doesn't connect to the internet.

Thanks.

So you can see the wireless network on your PC? Have you read the instructions which come with the router? Some say that there should be an order in which you switch on modem/router/pc etc. It *should* work if its picking up a signal (provided you have your wireless network card enabled on your PC) and that your internet connection type is set to the correct type (dynamic/static/ppoe etc)

What does your ISP say to use?

actually while this post is up here -ive got a problem myself. I have a Belkin wifi router and find that quite frequently the power light goes out on the router momentarily and the connection lights go out, losing the connection with the modem. The power light comes back on and the rest dont, However, i pull the plug and start it up again and it works. Sounds like a fault with something however there is still power going through the router.

OK first off RTFM for both bits of kit. You got the basics right, but you will need to do the following:-
  1. Connect the Tiscali modem directly to your computer and configure it using the supplied instructions. You will need to put in your userid and password in order for the modem to be able to connect to the Tiscali network. When this is done correctly, your computer should connect to the internet via the modem rather than the USB modem.
  2. NOW connect the wifi kit to the modem. Using the supplied instructions, connect your computer to the WI-Fi router and configure it to find the internet via the Tiscali modem.
  3. If the above two is done correctly, you should have Wi-Fi access to the internet.
  4. now secure your wifi networkd to prevent wardrivers hijacking it.

Correct, the power regulator is probably overheating and thus on its way out, two solutions, get more air passing around/over the router or replace it before it goes ping
