Default Anyone selling a VW golf 1.6 or 2.3 V5??

Hello Everyone

The time has now come for me to buy a car, and after loads of frusturated searching on autotrader and the like, I was wondering if anyone on here is selling an automatic VW Golf 1.6 (or 2.3 V5) with less than 50,000 miles? I did look on a VW forum but they are all boy/girl racers with ridicolous modifications

I can drive a manual, but since I will be car-sharing with my mum (only way I can afford a car) it has got to be an automatic..

Thanks

Maria

P.S any tips on what to look for when buying a car would be appreciated too

Do the V5's come with an auto option ? I don't think I've ever seen one.

Why less than 50k? You likely to be doing that many miles in it yourself? I would have thought the VW engine should be good for at least 200k if well maintained.

If the car was really good, I would stretch to 60,000 miles. Especially if it had full service history because high miles and full Serive histopry is better than low miles with no service history. But yeah, I think I would put a fair bit of miles onto it myself as I hope to use it to commute to work. Also, I am thinking of the re-sale value. I probably wouldnt sell it for a long time, but my dad is insisting on finding something with as low mileage as possible!

In addition to what Fizzwheel said, Yup they do. They are also quite rare and hard to come by. Damn me for missing one at the auction the other day

I wouldnt buy a V5, especially with an Auto Box, apparently the fuel consumption is terrible... Also the 1.6 in the MKIV bodyshell you might find under powered...

If your that worried about re-sale value the best golf to buy is going to be one of the Diesel engined models, yes it'll cost more to buy in the first place, but it'll hold its value for longer.

Especially if your doing long journeys, you'll get much better MPG out of a diesel.

Also I expect the V5 will cost a fortune to insure and they arent as sporty as VW make them out to be, a 1.8 GTI ( the turbo ) is going to be a whole more heap of fun to drive.

If you want it for commuting and are looking to put miles on it, then I'd suggest the TDCi models. Diesel Turbo is the way forward and VW have it pretty well sorted. The DTi is nice too. A GTi with a 2.0 litre turbo Diesel giving about 140 odd bhp....

Fair point. Don't forget though that a higher-milage one may well be cheaper in the first place though! And also, people will often judge an older car on condition rather than mileage when buying, so looking after it may be more worthwhile than worying too much about the mileage, if you do keep it for some time that is.

I'm guessing your Dad is like my Grandad used to be, he thought if a car had more than about 60k on the clock it was set for the knacker's yard. I'd call that just run in!
