Shell Petrol Station at the South-End of Montrose is having a V-Power Petrol day, 7-p a Litre off the normal price!! 20th September (tomorrow)
Should make it about the price of normal petrol. Remember to take a few petrol cans! ![]() |

I was confused by this promotion, I thought V-Power was just a fancy name for super unleaded, therefore higher octane and unsuitable for most folk. The Livingston one at St Johns had the same promotion on the night the baby was born, and there were queues of folk filling up fiestas and the like.
If I'm wrong about this do Shell not sell super unleaded? 'Cos there only ever seems to be this, the normal stuff, and diesel at the pump. Maybe I just always pull up to the wrong pump. |

A quick look at Shell's website solves the mystery.
http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?...t_ga_1602.html V-Power is 99 RON, which is higher than most super unleaded at 98 RON (though if 1 RON makes a difference I really don't know) Should we be putting this in an SV? Or any other engine where the manufacturers specifies 95 RON? Shell don't warn folk of the difference when they advertise the promotion anyway. |

If it is good to use in the SV I'll start using it. Not doing that many miles on the bike this year 'cos I've needed the car to carry stuff for work most days, I can only use the bike if I'm in the office all day, so for as often as I'm putting in 17 litres an extra quid a time wouldn't make any difference to me. I wouldn't use it though until I had confirmation it was OK. |

Garage fuel costs about £1 / litre = (£17 / tank )
Race fuel costs about £4.50 / litre = 4% power increase = (£75 / tank) Super race fuel about £9 / litre = 8% power increase = (£150 / tank) can be expensive but to some it must be worth the extra edge |

you shouldnt use V power in any pre fuel injection bikes it gets carb diaphragms like jelly to a sumo, just eats and eats, my friend ran it in his commuter scooter cause it did 45 with normal and 50 with v power and it fried his piston cause it burned too hot hahaha

It won't hurt a pointy, it'll just be a total waste of money. I used to use Optimax and then some Vpower in teh SV without ill effects, other than that I was paying about 5p per litre more than I had to for no noticable benefit whatsoever.
Lots of good threads on the supers on here... Basically, high octane is more resistant to detonation, so you can run higher compression, ignition advance, or boost (on a forced induction engine). Some smarter engines will take this into account with anti-knock sensors, frinstance the new BMWs actually retard the ignition when filled with lower octane fuels, and that hurts performance. But the SV's about as smart as a labrador, so won't do anything like that- it's built to run on tapwater, just about. Even if you bump the ignition advance like mine, regular is still fine. You need to go inside the engine before you need the pump supers. Big report in the press today about it too, though it's very one-sided, they (deliberately IMO) used cars known to not make use of the better fuels, and acted surprised when they got bad results. Stick it in a K1200 or a Cossie with a boost controller ![]()
