Tried Springbank(?) in The Grill bar in aberdeen a couple of weeks back, recommended by one of the locals. Very impressed, especially as there was no furry tongue the following morning.

Any whisky lover would have been at home there... :p

I'm sitting drinking a 12yo "Highland Single Malt... Selected by Tesco" which was £16 quid.

I bought it because my whisky habit costs a fortune (must stop while my liver is young enough!) and I used to drink Black Bottle as an everyday tipple to keep the cost down, can't get it in England so easily, so I thought I'd try this.

You know what, it ain't at all bad! Not the smoothest, but not paint stripper and certainly not any worse than some well known 10/12yo malts, of course it will be produced by the same distillery as one of those malts! Then sold by the cask to Tesco's who dilute and bottle it. It's better than some of the younger novelty crap they do for tourists, such as Balblair Elements or some of the no age statement stuff that the likes of Bowmore produce.

They also do a Speyside Single Malt and an Islay Single Malt, I'll try those next and let you know how I get on.

The Speyside and Islay were perfectly drinkable too. And since I've started on the budget whisky being the tight ar$e that I am, I may as well continue!

Sainsburys have a Laphroaig Quarter Cask on offer at £22 at the moment. It's under 6 yr old, 5 years then 7 months in the quarter cask. Apparently being 1/4 of the volume in each cask means it doesn't need so long to mature, but maybe that's a gimmick. A bit harsh on it's own, but at 48% abv, you'd expect to add a few drops water to this one, and of course that means you get more whisky out of your 70cl bottle ;) With just the right amount it rounds off very nicely and is very similar to a Laphroaig 10 yr old.

Sainsbury's also do the equivalent to the Tesco's own label malts, and I'm about to crack open their 'Taste the Difference' Highland one now and will report back. I wouldn't be surprised if it's exactly the same as the Tesco's one, bought by the barrel from the same distillery, but it's also on offer at the moment for a bit over 14 quid, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Not good TBH, I'd buy the Tesco's one again, but not this one. It leaves an unpleasant metallic aftertaste. At only 14 quid it's not great loss, I'll just keep it as a mixer.

Buuurrrger you!!
Bet I could beat you at snooker in your badly lit mans club too;)

I only do proper mans clubs, not them with the dodgy slippery poles dotted round the place!
