HP and Toshiba have been realiable for me. Acer where ok but not sure these days.

The Macbook was a supprising jem despite being a MAC.

Basically pick the model and google the reviews for that laptop and see what hits you get.

Cheers

As a side point to this, how long ago did you buy the laptop from PC World?

I'm guessing fairly recently as they're willing to swap it.

Read up on the Consumer regulations (mainly the Sale of Goods Act), the retailler doesn't have the right to demand a course of action (ie, declining money back) when the consumer has not had "good use" of the said goods. In fact, it also goes as far as to state about compensation, and claims for such (ie, trips to & from the shop, lost work, lost time of use) are valid 6 years from date of purchase.

Print off the Sale of Goods Act, and dump it on the store managers desk, as they've clearly forgotten it.

About the laptops, my top tip is to get one that you are happy with. Don't go for what the sales people tell you, know what rough specs you want, and push for a better deal than is offered.

EDIT: The laptop cost £400 new? Was that when you bought it, or the current "new" stock selling price (for the same or equivalent model). If they no longer stock the same or an equivalent, they're not entitled to limit you to that price. They have to replace faulty stock like for like. If they don't have anything "like" it, they have to proceed to the next highest model, regardless of value. They also must take the value when it was bought, not any depreciation due to age of the units they haven't sold.

Yeh it was £400 new. They don't sell that model anymore so said I can choose one. Even one at £400 is a lot better speck than the one I had. Which I have had for just under a year, so its still under guarantee

Whilst we are on the subject. My daughter is after one and we have decided on either:
Toshiba Equium L40-156
2GB memory
80GB hard drive
OR
Advent 9115
2GB memory
120GB hard drive

Anybody care to advise me, Toshiba for the name or Advent for the memory????

Re: New Laptop - Please help me choose the right one

I went and got an Acer 5920 today. Very happy with it, its really fast and has loads of built in hardware. Vista is a pain in the a$$ though, seems needlessly complicated. But hey ho, I'm sure I'll get used to it. Hopefully this laptop will last a bit longer!

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP :)

I would avoid getting any Vista laptop with only 1gb memory. I recently got a Dell with high specs but it ran Vista bad and replaced it with a Sony....beautiful machine
