Re: Front calipers
I bet you are trying to push it the wrong way out. It aint exactly intuitive which direction they slide. Grab it with some plyers and twist it and then go back and forth until you see it moving one way, then you'll know. If it won't twist in place, yeah, it's corroded. Good luck -Dave

Re: Front calipers
My N/S front caliper has this very problem, i'm going to set about it with a set of easy outs this weekend. Failing that i'll try the punch fron the other side method.

Re: Front calipers
Annoyingly too late for this thread, but its worth ensuring the pins are greased, and I find a little twist with some grips as part of routine maintenance stops them siezing up.I learned my lesson when the rear caliper did this, and I ended up buying a used one off Ebay.

Re: Front calipers
The air impact gun is alright, but I like the control of the impact driver and how it causes screwdriver bits to bite into the head of the screw.
Added shock value when attacking corroded bolts too. And an easy out, IMO is NOT a good way to get those out, it'll expand the pin and make it grab even harder. |
Re: Front calipers
Good point mate, i didn't consider that. I could cut it in half and try turning each half at a time then get the drill out failing that.
Big props to the last person who messed with my brakes! |
Re: Front calipers
Nah, grind the little nipple off the other side and soak it in penetrant oil, the knock it out with a parallel punch.
Then when you reassemble use some copperslip on them and put a little smear of black silicon over the exposed head if you can be bothered. I just take the pin out and regrease it regularly and ignore the shiny bit thats exposed. |
Re: Front calipers
Is the pin secure without the nipple bit?

Re: Front calipers
Yes, its got a large head on the other end of it so it can't go outwards, and a pin through it, so it can't go inwards.
Perfectly safe IMO |
Re: Front calipers
What a bloody nightmare it's turned out to be. I've drilled and got one out, the other is in penerating oil, it is well and truely stuck. Put one back together, with plenty of copper grease, just the other to go.
