thats how you do it on a curvy, don't know about a pointy.

EDIT: arrg beaten to it

waste of ?20 of oil if you're not going to spend ?5 on a new filter IMHO :D

You will need replacement oil, say 4 litres of semi synthetic motorcycle oil & and a new oil filter. Get both from your local suzuki dealer if possible & you won't go wrong, but probably available from anywhere else.
You could also consider getting a replacement crush washer for the sump plug (not essential - you can reuse the existing one once or twice)

Warm the bike up a bit & switch off. Put the bike on a paddock stand if you have one to give yourself some more room (and it's stable enough not to fall off it), otherwise side stand is fine.

Put a catch tray under the sump plug (2 x 2 litre water bottles on their side, with their side cut off will do if you haven't bought a proper one. Plus newspaper/cardboard to catch the drips.

Remove the sump plug & catch the falling warm oil
Remove the oil filter. If you don't have an oil filter wrench, hammer an old screwdriver through it to get some leverage to unscrew it.

Make sure you are discarding the rubber seal with the old oil fillter.

smear some clean oil on the rubber seal of the new oil filter and screw it on to the bike, hand tight only.

Replace the sump plug & crush washer. Do not cross thread & do not overtighten just a tiny bit more than hand tight is required.

Top up oil (the filler cap is above the oil sight window) should be able to put 3 litres in before you start checking the level.
To check the level, bike must be off any paddock stand, on flat & level ground, pull the bike towards yourself while on the side stand until it is upright. Once you see the oil level to be half way in the window, start the bike & run for a minute & allow the oil to settle for a minute before checking the level again as above. & repeat until the oil is half way in the window when the bike is level.

The red bit really shouldn't need to be done. But if you find you need to go down this route, then make sure you are stabbing the screwdriver into the end of the filter furthest away from the engine. Otherwise you run the risk of actually hitting the thread the filter screws on to.

BigApe, thanks for adding that. Yeah I don't think I go that close to the thread, but I do avoid the bottom of the filter furthest from the bike in case the filter just rips open without coming off the bike.
I have never been able to get it off without a screwdriver & hammer. What am I doing wrong?

Screwing it on too tight. I tighten mine by hand and loosen it by hand. It has never come undone and never leaked.

To avoid having to use the hammer and screwdriver, buy an oil filter wrench off eBay. You should be able to get a decent one (ie with a chain) for around £5

Spend £5  go and wash your mouth out while I lie down.

Plus who doesn't like being able to use a hammer?

p.s. It's not always me that's done the original tightening. But thanks for the idea of how much to tighten it.

An oil filter wrench is handy imo.

I don't trust my own hand tightening... I'd rather have it just that little bit tighter.
