I've got no beef with companies making a profit, but Shell have made some pretty dodgy decisions to help them make that profit- environmental shortcuts, safety shortcuts in production... Not as bad as some I suppose.

Re: £14 Billion

The short fat bloke on BBC Breakfast explained it a bit like this.

Shell find and pump the oil out of the ground. Then is it sold on at a set price per barrel. By the time it comes out of the nozzle at the forecourt, the Govt take, as said before, around 66%. That leaves around 36 pence per litre for Shell to pay for everyting from the drill bit in the North Sea to the cost of the forecourt and everyting in between.

It's not Shell thats making huge wodges of cash out of us, it's HMG!

Why do you assume that all Shell do is sell petrol in the UK?

Shell makes most of their money abroad, but declare it as profit here. That's good for us cos they then get taxed on it.

Shell make very little money from UK petrol retail operations. I suggest you all go look at the accounts published with the profit announcement to see where the profit comes from before condemning them as greedy.

And those commie gits at Amicus that wants them slapped with a windfall tax! Get a grip! How many people work for Shell? (and how many belong to Amicus - not many I bet!) and these 'champions of the worker' want to penalise a successful EMPLOYER! I could rant on for ages.......

Not so. It's a tad under 4% at the net-net level.....or a bit less than you would expect on a good long-term savings account. If it was less than that, they wouldn't get the investors.

If you look at the figures, their revenue from petrol in the UK is pretty miniscule.

We need another few Shells. I read on Robert Peston's blog on the BBC News website that the Govt is ?7bn short, ignoring any economic downturn. It can only come from one place. Stand by for a clobbering in the budget in March.

Probably find that money goes to the site operator, not Shell PLC (but I don't know this as a fact)
