Have you ever notice, the problem is always with the last piece of kit you test?

Heheh, Tiger, as always, astute concise and insightful answers :D

Okay, haven't tried any of this stuff as yet.

I really can't be bothered with the prospect of a few hours switching between dos windows and reboots. However I know I have to.

Background:

MOST IMPORTANT: Hookie copy of XP - Guilty

Decided that's not right - Guilty

Bought a MS Genuine advantage key - Guilty

So there's the background.

What I did next.....

Got rid of all the stuff i didn't need on the logical drive (6 Gb)

No problems.

Deleted logical partition.

No problems.

Tried installing SP2 for XP from MS Update was working ok although insufficient room on drive.

So deleted what appeared to be a part of the SP2 update according to add/remove software.

Then after some advice on here, went after partition magic.

This is when I found I could no longer download and started to get the HTTP 403 (Forbidden) error.

Tried update again and started to get same problem although MS reports it as some xxxxx13191A error (can't quite remember, I'm at work now)

Anyhow, I'll give the various options a try and report back.

Thanks for all the advice so far guys.

I am still thinking about a new box though :smt024

Ah, but there is one thing that PC owners can do that Mac owners can't...

Surely you mean "IP" higher if referring to geeks.

The non-geek answer is to dump the old PC and get new and not waste time with the old.

The same could be said for bikes which is something i've failed to do on too many occasions.

a geek, moi?

let's eval()
- regular slashdot reader: 1!
- use dvorak keyboard layout: 1!
- loads of superfluous hardware: 1!
- using weird OS-es like linux, BSD, HP-UX: 1!
- spending way too muc time according to girlfriends taste on tinkering with - - home-made multimediacenters and PVR's: 1!

hmmm...
I guess the answer must be 42.

duibhceK mate, having the faintest clue what the dvorak keyboard layout might even be pins you down as a geek!
