yeah, knew about this the night of the budget, My previously band F rx8 (?205 pa) is now ?440 pa.

the reason Im upset is because it is retrospective to 2001, when if faced with the new bands wouldn't have bought the car in the first place!

This is why I don't have a car. It's laughable that they even bother to try and hide behind the Co2 emissions to screw people for more money.

its because ,....

Cars MPG's are tested in Lab conditions over a 3 or 4 mile rolling road test with a maximum speed of 56 miles an hour...

and for paying for the 500? difference in 41000 miles... what aload o ****e...

Most cars will achieve good mpg on these runs....

I am not in the least bit suprissed that it only did 47 mpg...

Yeah, I can definitely get that published figures are under ideal conditions, but what I can't get is that my real world driving can result in 42 mpg out of a nearly 10 year old 2.5 V6 lump, what the hell is going wrong if they're only getting 47mpg out of a brand new car that's half the size, a litre less capacity and half the horsepower.

Is it possible it's all just relative, ie. if the leaden footed driver from the vid was put in my car would she only get 20mpg and if I was put in the Polo would I be more likely to close up on 70mpg?

Hmmm so my 120 a year 1.5d would go down ?10 if it was a couple of years newer....

how do you find out what band your car will fall into. saying that I only pay £35 a year at the moment so hopefully it will be free

Oh bloody hell - I guess I should find out what my car would fall in (2001, vw 1.6 golf, automatic).

I only just worked out today that my salary is a hell of alot lower than i originally thought - bloody tax man takes so much money :(

Does this only apply to cars of a certain age? Cos i've got a 99 Rover and Rover isn't contained in the list. Does that mean mines free? :D

Nope, though the new rates will seriously distort the used car market, since the max tax on a car pre march 2001 is £200:

First registered before March 2001 and below 1,549cc £120
First registered before March 2001 and above 1,549cc £200

My previous car, Xsara VTS, would have cost me £300 next year since I bought it new Nov 2001, but had I bought it 6 months prior, the very same car would have been just £200

Not too bad then, i'd budgeted on ?100ish for 6 months. Still a pain though considering the car only does 10 miles a week if that, but its needed for weekly hospital trips unfortunately.
