I have a quite large DVD and a lesser CD collection that proves that wrong.

In went and bought 2 CD's and 3 DVD's yesterday.

So maybe its YOUR soapbox that needs vacating :)

Look at the current announcement that Microsoft is switching off the authentication servers for a failed iTunes like service which will leave people who PAID for a product unable to access/unlock those products if they have to buy a new laptop or upgrade their OS.

Its the fact that most of what the "Entertainment Industries" pump out is total cack that leaves people unwilling to pay for stuff unless they are already assured of the quality which they assertain by downloading etc.

Besides with music, whats the difference between downloading an MP3 from a non-DRM site and the old days of taping the Radio1 Top 40 on a Sunday night?

The old distribution models are being proven to be be out of date and the execs are too busy trying to fix what technology has broken to preserve things how they were than to embrace the modern world and get a handle on how to generate revenue in the 21st Century.

Wouldn't it be better for the consumer is bands were forced to actually work to earna living, meaning that in any given city on a weekend night you had a choice of say half a dozen gigs to go to by "tier-1" acts, at resonable prices (due to competition due to the choice) with the knowledge if you miss one band this month they will be back in a month or two.

Much better than Madonna/Floyd ripping off their fans to the tune of £100+ for an hour or two's experience.

Volume and choice- when I taped off the radio I couldn't go and get entire albums on demand ;)

But I do agree with Soulkiss on the DRM stuff, it's not very effective and it can stop you from using music you've actually paid for. I don't really do downloads, I like CDs, so it doesn't make a big difference to me either way but in pretty much every area of DRM and anti-piracy, you find the same- legitimate use is restricted and piracy isn't stopped.

i don't use itunes (or infact buy or download any music these days) and neither are we a signed band sitting on our arses

I just happened to be fairly pleased when a company came along and asked us to be the first track on their unsigned bands album, and as they liked our stuff, they said they'd put an ep up for us and if that does well they'll stick out second one up there. They have no rights to the music and get a small cut of the sales

I am also not sure as to how much performing gigs actually gets you when you start adding up security and all that... i imagine advertising is a biggie... but then i am just guessing

Nah, I think its me who owes an apology to you.

My rant wasnt about you as such - congratulations that you have achieved what you have, iTunes IS an indicator of a kind - so well done.

My anger is with the RIAA/MPAA and their international counterparts/clones and the whole "who actually owns the music if you buy a CD"

They are trying to make a case that if you rip your CD's to put on your mp3 player, then put those files in a folder that is shared on your network - maybe you have a fileserver and a laptop, that is illegal.

If all I am purchasing is a license to listen to the music, then why will they not replace a damaged CD at COST.

Also I am looking at leaving the UK, which means that thanks to the scam that is DVD regions, I am going to have to break the law or else re-buy all my DVD's

People are not yet seeing the problems that this type of protectionist behaviour will lead to, and unless they come to that realisation then laws will be passed.

Take the case in the US recently where someone was running a BitTorrent "TRACKER" site - basically its just a load of links to where the files are - but the actual files never actually exsist on that server.

They just got fined $110,000,000 which may seem fair until you realise that the US only gave $3,000,000 to aid Burmah....

The amounts of money involved (well someone needs to keep the execs in Ferrari's, Cocaine and Hookers) means that they can bully the "little guy" with their teams of lawyers - take the Disney Corp - they have EVERY law firm in Florida on retainer, which means if you want to sue them it has to be handled by a law firm from outside that state - which makes it more expensive AND puts them at an advantage.

We all know that DRM is incredibly accurate, and has no flaws whatsoever don't we? :rolleyes:

DRM, in many many cases, actually prevents legitimate owners from transferring media from one place to another.
