Re: Just done something really Stupid...
well....I've got it  The words "Off Bitten Than More Chew Can You" Keep running through my head.
Ah Well - will have another attempt at getting through to MC(Never again)E tomorrow then spin it around to a friend's garage for a closer look. So far there's one slightly wet fork leg - possibly down to being trailerd over in the sun and it could prob use a different set of downpipes (Number three's got a sizable crease) although if it's not screwing it up they stay - 2nd opinion imminent. The former owner roadraced it for a round in Ireland as is alledgedly without problems (although he did say if there was anything he'd change that would be it cos they were a bit rubbish and with the strength of the dollar you could get a really nice set from the states) If it's going to get wet some of the wiring's a bit exposed - spot of isulation tape in order. Low geared but that's prob fine for purpose... couple of guages (gouges??) in the front wheel rim - Guessing cack handed tyre irons but I'll get a second opinion on that too. Starts first time (once fuel pump has bee turned on) What else? Rust. Could go mad with stainless bolt sets there. Everywhere except the engine anyway. Still haven't ridden it. (tomorrow, tomorrow). Decided that if I'd broken all the other rules of bike buying I might as well do the full set... All/any further disasters to follow.... Oh and I've got friday off.... Yippeee |
Re: Just done something really Stupid...
So your happy then? I bought my bike unseen from ebay.. wasn't too chuffed at first but a few new bits bolted on and all good
Has it got a daytime mot? Or, you gonna transport it in a van to trackdays? |
Re: Just done something really Stupid...
year's full MOT - might have to source some mirrors for peace of mind - then again.....

Get on and rag the **** off it. Throw caution to the wind and just ride it.
Just make sure it's safe first of course. :) |
Re: Just done something really Stupid...
Don't be too worried about it (not that it sounds like you are). So long as the engine sounds and runs fine, you should be good to go. Anything else is just titivation. Especially if it's just for the track.
So you have Friday off work. Wicked. Guess we'll see you round mine some time Friday early afternoon then? |

Re: Just done something really Stupid...
Ridden it. Finally.
My ears are bleeding & haven't been anywhere near the redline (not gone far enough to warm engine - got to tax it - bleeding ears/ plane taking off etc - yeah excuses excuses) First problem: Judder when braking hardish. (As hard as you would when you haven't checked the calipers are done up and your brakes are juddering) Initial diagnosis: Floating discs aren't. They're bout 70% solid (Wheel/ steering head bearings checked & fine) All sugestions on getting 'em moving welcome.... Damn AR getting in the way of Motorcycle tinkering... 8-) Have 2 so far... 1) Ride it a bit & see if they free up  (Going to preempt that with making sure everthing's done up first and the tyres are less soft :D) 2) Twist the center bits with an easy out and WD40... (making sure all traces of WD40 are then removed) Anymore for any more? (Suggetions involving matches or any other flame maker are banned) Still not taken any pics... Edit: Damn AR interfering with Motorcycle tinkering |
Re: Just done something really Stupid...
Right - I'm a bad person - ditched work yesterday in favour of CBR tinkering.....(first sunny day since I bought it)
Progress made. 1) Split link in chain: It is now facing in the correct direction. 2) The Braking Judder.... It still has it - all though doing up the LH brake caliper more than finger tight (and the steering stem top nut :cyclopsani:) was the first great initial improvment - Using them's also helped - not sure having a (still not quite) floating disc one side and a fixed the other is great... Current braking situation now : it will often judder slightly under normal braking but drag 'em or hammer them and it's not noticeable 3) Judder part2 Can also feel some sort of knocking going over ripley/ bumpy road surfaces - kind of like a small hammer tapping up inside the top of the forks. The know nothing diagnosis: a) stearing head bearings: - although there isn't anything much in the way of movment if you bounce it up and down on the brakes b) New brake pads ratting against discs - (erm jury's out is this possible?) c) Fork set up (haven't yet acertained presence of oil etc) Anyway short of pulling the calipers off to see if the person who forgot to do them up put them back together OK - my expertise (:laughat:) is done. (Ought to do it really but left useful stuff like copper grease at the folks keeping my dad's torque wrench company - must really buy my own sometime - excuses excuses etc) Next think on the list now is to get it down the shop... Dinted bit of header needs to go asap, Chain prob needs riveting and someone other than me needs to do a bit of front end fault analysis - I don't do forks - someone might lose an eye or something. Still - have now run it to and from Kingston and into work this morning, made lots of noise and annoyed my parent's neighbours lapping the block doing brake tests (lack of mirrors adding additional excitement) It's all good fun.... Must take some photos |
