So I file down the nuts until I get to the stud, at which point the tension will be released, allowing me to remove the downpipe with less swearing?

I've got an engine on the way with a few nice bits done to it but sans geni, thermostat, starter motor and clutch, all of which are salvagable off the old engine.

No, then the tension on the nut will be released, allowing you to remove the nuts from the studs.

This will allow you to slide the flange down the downpipe, then you can begin to try to get the downpipe itself out of the head.

Excellent. Thanks again mate, and if you do need any engine bits, give me a shout!

Best advice I can give you is spend a minute or 2 looking at the thing and figure out exactly what is holding what together. You will end up rolling about on the floor and banging your head a lot.

Spend whatever money you need to on tools, using the wrong tools will end in expensive mistakes.
