On the subject of pumps, do you think a hand operated bicycle pump would be strong enough? Or should I say, would I be strong enough?

Just thought it would be handy for touring in case of emergencies

I would think that physically you could pump it up that way, I presume the only question is around the pump itself, does it take the pressure, etc, will it leak if you try and pump up to 36psi or whatever.

I'm assuming you only want to use it for top ups here! (unless an emergency)

Early 80's BMW's used to have a pump fitted as standard, but as the volumetric capacity of a bicycle pump is so small then is goning to take forever to pump a tyre up. Plus is going to get real hot too.

Mind you your arm muscles wil get a great work out!!

Possibly a better idea is you can get small Co2 cycliders that screw into an adaptor, which then connects to your valve in the normal way. Posh ones have a valve to control the on/off function. These will fit under your rear seat, although I don't know how many C02 cyclinders will be needed to fill a tyre. One or 2 will do a bicycle tyre.

Halfords sell these in the bicycle section. Better still get AA/RAC roadside assistance!

Push bike tyres often run at much higher pressures- some car pumps aren't strong enough to fully inflate some bike tyres ;) The other way round is fine, but will take FOREVER- I counted once and it takes about 150 strokes of my big stirrup pump to do an SV rear tyre. So with a hand pump, that'd be something like 1000 strokes at a guess :D

Paddock stand bungs... If all you want to use them for is the stand, then just use 2 M8 bolts, that's all they really are, bolts with other stuff attached.

The small halfords gauge is very good, you see it all over the place under different brands for various prices. Accurate, tough and disposable. Pumps... I prefer tall stirrup pumps to foot pumps but that's personal taste, mine cost me £8 from a pushbike shop 20 years ago and it's still going. Though I have a compressor now ;)

Speaking of compressors- maybe a cheap jumpstart box might make sense? They tend to have air compressors and are very handy for those flat battery moments.

I use a motrax mini pump. It's small and light enough to leave at the bottom of a rucksack and forget about until you need it.

Got a Halfords one been alright. Noticed Tesco had one in their petrol station on offer the other day, AA or RAC branded and was only £2.50.

Halfords cheap £10 pump and one of the little metal pens that they sell for about £6 I think. Works a treat!!! :)

See, until recently I have been using a pen and then I tested it against a decent tyre pressure gauge and found out how inaccurate it was!

The pump can be a cheapy - so long as it stick air in your tyre, then it's grand, but I would shell out for a half decent pressure gauge and look after it :)

Am I right in thinking that paddock stand bobbins and these R&G cotton reels are one and the same thing?
