Re: Running in a new bike.

Ok this is something I'll have to do when I get my bike in March. Had a little read of the MototuneUSA page and it suggests hard accelaration and decelaration in 2nd, 3rd, & 4th. What about 5th or 6th? Does he mean hard acceleration from idle to 5500rpm during the first 500 miles. Forgive me for sounding like a total newbie on this subject but its my first brand new bike and don't want to feck the engine up on my first ride out.

When warming the engine up how does it take to get the engine up to temp in a K9?

Decelaration?? Is this when the bike is travel at too high a speed in a low gear??

By the book.

That article makes interesting reading. I didn't really stick to the run in religiously with my sv and know i definitely wont with my zxr as 4000 is about 10 mph in 6th gear.

Must admit I found it very interesting but I'm not sure how much faith I put in it.
With my very limited knowledge about such things I do see some logic in what is being said but then I think if the book is saying to keep it down there must be a reason.

Warming up time: give it 10 minutes. This dosn't neseccarily mean 10 minutes idling on the side stand, it just means ten minutes  I give my bike 10 minutes or a few miles...but then, my bike is 34,000 miles old (nearly) so its nicely run in now :smt040 Generally, dont use lots of throttle while the engine is "cold", nor rev the living hoo-ha out of it.

Deceleration - braking, effectivly. The rate at which you decelerate will determine (unless you just whip the clutch in) how quick the engine decelarates.

Running in is a bit of a can of worms, but a bike that is run in well should incur no problems; ones that are run in too gently might use a bit of oil during their life, ones that are run in too hard are likley to go *pop*. Stick to the recommended rpm's given in the handbook, change the oil when it says to, but dont be too gentle with the bike, just use it.

I doubt i'll have my bike for longer than 2 years. So it's all in the warranty. lol. PLus as my mechanic says if you get a bad one its gonna break anyway..

you don't need hard acceleration in 5th & 6th to run it in

No, not from idle, hard acceleration means feeding the clutch in at least 2-3000 revs and then keeping the throttle fairly open until, say 9000 revs

No, during the first 20 miles

It has a temperature gauge just watch that, if you want to warm it up (I don't) don't pull away until it reads, say 25 degree C and then take it easy until the temp is higher, say 70 (e.g. ride to somewhere you can do 9000 revs in 2nd)

No, (but kinda) it means the throttle is closed. It just means slowing down, in this case using engine braking, not your brakes & not pulling in the clutch (so not necessarily travelling at too high a speed you could do that with the throttle open & you wouldn't slow down)

What a **** :( so you don't care about the biker that's going to get your bike 2nd hand? :???:
So you don't care if you get 10% more performance for the 2 years you have it?
Yeah, all maintenance is a waste of time - if you get a bad one, you've got a bad one :smt102

Doesn't the manual say below 5500rpm for first 500 miles?

Anyone know a place in Glasgow good for breaking bikes in?
