I asked my doctor about this for very similar reasons. It was a doctor who I got on very well with so I knew he'd be honest.
He told me that they tell everyone to lay off the booze for any reason at all. The only way it might harm the effectiveness of the anti-biotic would be if you drank so much you threw up the pill. But he also said people often get far worse hangovers when drinking whilst taking anti-biotics.
I think it was amoxicillin I was taking, as I'm allergic to penisillin.
But I'm not giving you medical advice here - just my experience

I think ammoxicillin contains penisillin so if you are allergic to penisillin you'll be allergic to both. I'm sure that's what they said when I reacted to ammoxi

Yeah......it's a weird one as they act differently, but generally speaking if you develop an allergy to one, you will also be at risk of developing allergies from the others. I was given Amoxycillin in a hospital in Victoria, Texas for accute tonsilitis and was given it intravenously. I only went to hospital because I had to according to me health insurance. Anyway, I was discharged 10 mins after the injection and was back at my friends in 20 minutes. Within 30 mins, he was ruching me back to A&E as my whole head, throat and neck had swollen to the point I could hardly breathe and I honestly thought there was a chance I could die....very scary. I was treated, they told me off initially for not telling them I was allergic to penicillin and I told them I had taken Penicillin B5 my whole life for tonsilitis (which I used to get A LOT) and never had a problem.

I am now not allowed to take the risk with any form of penicillin and was given one of those necklaces to wear which I lost years ago.

Trust me....if you're allergic to one, don't risk it with the others. If Michael had lived another 3 minutes from the hospital or we'd hit traffic, I could well be dead now.

Luckily my reaction was far less extreme than yours. I felt fine in myself but Turned bright red and was pretty itchy, doctor said it was the worst rash he'd ever seen.
Like you I'd only took the ammoxicillin because it was there, I didn't feel I particularly needed it but the doctor said I should. Was annoying (in a way) because it meant I had to have another two days off work.

I think best thing to do paul is get her to have one drink leave it a couple of hours or something then if she's still concious - party on

+1 I don't lie risking things, but it's the same old same old, doctors have to advise us not to do certain things because they need to cover their backs which is fair enough. I just wouldn;t really be an issue for me not to have a drink when everyone else is....I'd just stay sober and laugh at everyone the next day!!!

When I went back to hospital with the reaction, I was kept in for two days and refused a flight home, had to wait another two days for that and to top it all off, I was due to get a bus back to my mum and dads as I'd left my car there, but didn't want to be sat on a bus for four hours. Asked my dad to pick me up (2hrs tops in a car) and he said no because he was playing golf, not even a competition. My mum doesn't get mad with him very often, but my god, that day I heard her scream at him to stop being so selfish and pick me up.

When he met me at Heathrow he was nearly sick when he saw the state of my face.......served him right....lol!

Flagyl [or metrinoizadole.....aye a word I can't spell!] is the only antibiotic you should really avoid with alcohol.
I.m more concerned your wife has had a chest infection for six weeks?!
Think a wee visit back to your GP to get her chest sounded and a possible chest X-ray is in order!

aye, ironically enough I'm the one who's on deaths door now. Feel absolutely terrible. Hot head, cold hands, hot sore throat, runny nose with cracked stinging skin, underwater style hearing, keep falling over/bumping into things due to dizziness, can't breathe properly...

We had a door to door seller earlier, he was really chirpy considering the weather - told him I was feeling dreadful and had just got back from mexico... he soon disappeared lol
