Thats about right for an engine out/strip and rebuild plus tyres.
Personally Id have just bought another engine for £250 and kept the old one as a spare.

4th gear replaced, that's a frigging nightmare of a job it's a total engine out strip down.

It's not a fireblade where you can whip the gearbox out just taking sidecovers and clutch off.

Surely you knew it was a big job?

+1

You will have to remove the tank, airbox, throttle bodies, electrical connectors, drain the coolant system, before you can drop the engine which is a pain in the **** in it's self.

You then need at least a days labor (working day 8hrs), to to strip and rebuild then engine.

Fitting, as they say is the reverse of the removal.

So, lets be optimistic here and say 2 days 1/2 day each for removal and fitting and a day to do the work, as a minimum @40quid an hour dealer rates you are looking at 640quid without parts.

In all likely hood it took them longer, and they would have needed the gaskets and parts.

New tyres are quiet expencive depdning on what you went for, you are looking at anywhere from £160 to over £200.

Balancing the throttle bodies would have been the least of your worries as, ideally it would of had to been done when you refit the old ones as part of the re-assembly/setup.

So, we are looking at at least 840 quid for labour and the tyres. Suddenly that other 60quid for a few gaskets and washers, etc doesn't look so bad, does it?

Big job(ie) yes, and seems a fair price BUT why 5 months? That's what I'd be more annoyed about!

Listen to Richie. His prices are bang on. It's the labour that's the crippler..........but 5 months (even doing bits of the job here & there)....... takes the ****!
As they have taken that long, I'd try & agree £200 towards labour (if it's not through the books) then slap your family member for recommending them!

You can't do an engine strip in "bits and bobs" over 5 months and not make a total f***up of it. You need a clear work space and do it all at one hit so you don't misplace/forget anything. Unless of course you are ridiculously methodical in labelling parts etc.

I would ponder the wisdom of even getting a job like this done though. Should have asked the .org first :-P

£350 on a new engine, sell old one for £200 easy. Sorted. (reason, loads of engines around with blown cranks but good gearboxes, so good cranks worth a chunk)

I'm a complete mechanical halfwit, don't label a bloody thing & am always away with work so can't do it in one hit. I did this job in a 6 weeks in my pigsty of a garage! Bike ran fine afterwards & no bolts, gears or engine parts left over either.
