Thanks everyone.

Symptoms at the moment are vomiting, diarrhoea and a severely distended stomach (looks like a starving African child), full of gas according to an ultrasound. Blood tests show Liver function OK, still waiting for urine tests to confirm Kidney function, and nothing out of the ordinary on the ultra-sound other than the volume of gas. So now they are testing blood for a gluten intolerance.

Actually my daughter is on a strict gluten free diet. Tesco have a good range of foods called "Free From". And the Tesco gluten free sausages are really nice, in fact unlike other GF products you cant actually tell. The biscuits are a bit pasty, the bread is flaky and expensive. But we have been feeding her three years after being diagnosed and the prescriptions help of course with the costs.
For the record my daughter is not a coeliac either.
Gluten is in 90% of all the food that we eat, look at the ingredients in some random foods in your kitchen. Gluten and wheat everywhere.....

My ex suffered from it, she used to swell up like a balloon in a matter of minutes and would feel bloated / gassy as well.

Trouble is they put Gluten into a lot of foods. IIRC its used a bulking / thickening agent. So you'll need to read the labels on everything you buy carefully which we used to find it meant took bl**dy ages when doing the weekly shop.

Sainsbury's used to do a fantastic range of Gluten free food, but I dont know if they still do. Tesco's also have a limited range of stuff, particularly we found chocolate bars.

I was told that I was to get checked for it a few years ago and had to go through the unpleasantness of my insides being checked from both ends!!!

Not a very nice experience in fact i felt violated but thankfully for me it came back clear.

When i heard the first thing i did was google and found lots of sites with useful info but my biggest fear was changing my diet drastically.

i know this doesn't help your situation -Ralph- and hope it doesn't cause your family too much upset.

This will only be a little help if you do need it, but i will post tomorrow with name of the gluten free flour i use for one of our friends. It's amazing and makes cakes, pancakes, biscuits and all sorts taste just like normal and turn out just the same. Gluten free foods have come a long way lately and i have about 30 of my recipes adpted already if you need any. Hope your little one is ok and you don't have to wait too long for a diagnosis. X

distended belly omh DD has it lol.;) Sorry to hear this Ralph, hope you get the answers soon and wee man doesnt suffer too much in the meantime.
