Thanks chum - it was exactly right. The PCB had gone.
I tried a few local people but they either didn't return calls, or say that they were not working due to the holiday. In the end I spoke to British Gas -they offered a fix-anything solution for £192, and would come later that day (yesterday). Fixed in about 20 mins - now the house is warm again, which I'm pleased about (being a southerner etc).

Thanks for your help - it did make me sound a little more knowledgable to the (rather stroppy) BG man. :-)
