I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure you don't want to be putting wd40 on your chain, it's designed to penetrate and degrease so would really **** your o rings up.

Parafin and re-lube is more than enough.

I've seen it a few times on the org that WD-40 on chains is ok. Some people even clean their chains with it because it contains paraffin I believe but I could be talking balls. :lol:. I just give the the face plates of the chain a quick spray to get any old residue off. Got to keep the blingy chain looking blingy. ;)

Maybe if used instead of KY jelly. If O-rings can take chain lube and all manner of guff from the road surely the nation's favourite tool will be ok. It can't be that virulent a solvent, can it?

Always used WD40 to clean my chains. But I don't spray it liberally on the chain I spray it on a rag sparingly, and use elbow grease to scrub. Pristine clean and a nice base to immediately cover with chain lube.

I haven't had a chain fall off from things disintegrating. And neither has Carnivore, who showed me how to clean it properly using WD40. And hes been doing it for eleven years.

On the subject of Muc off, I wouldn't put any of their products near my bikes. The last person I know who used their bike cleaner it did something weird to their headlight lenses!

whether its any good or not for me is a moot point. Its f*cking expensive chain cleaner when parafin does just as good a job and its much much cheaper...

took 4 hours elbow grease, an old toothbrush, and a small bit of kerosene in a jamjar. Our resident chemist A*H told me not to throw out the old kerosene, as it's a solvent - and so the muck sinks to the bottom of the jamjar and you can use the fuel again. So it really is worth giving a go.

I would like to say the cheapest cleaner I have found for the gunk on the wheels off the chain is Mr Sheen :-) Magic stuff, old oil glides off the wheel.

Although, if you don't fancy your hands getting dirty, or anywhere near the rear wheel...that SDoc stuff is quite impressive, but darn expensive, but then I didn't pay for it :-)

My service book recommends Kerosene but couldn't find it at local B&Q etc. Anybody know where it's typically available from?

Kerosene is American for paraffin. Garden stores, petrol stations, motor factors, t'interweb.

Oh, and WD-40 beats paraffin in one v. important way. Those filthy smokers are less likely to self-immolate if they find they can't wait until after cleaning if they use it.

The local B&Q call it parascene and sell it as fuel for greenhouse heaters.

Or white spirit is pretty similar but a little thinner.
