At a guess yes, someone's boloxed something. :-) All sorts of ways it could have gone. As for the noise, pretty much all bikes have some more noise with the clutch out than in, especially older ones, mostly due to the clutch release bearing (although my VFR rattles like hell if the carbs aren't balanced).

I wouldn't worry overly much about it though, clutch problems are pretty cheap and easy to sort (relatively speaking), not that I'd expect problems at 25k, my VFR's clutch I'm pretty sure was original and was still working at ~65k, I'm not easy on clutches either. :-)

Cool :)
I`m not normally bothered by the odd noise etc but with it being new to me, and having a boloxed casing I wondered, lol.
Fakkit, cant hear the rattles through a helmet anyway :)

I was wrong, it is alloy not steel, looked like steel with the cover on and some filth on it. But its still been welded tho......

If it were me, I'd let sleeping dogs lie. Have a good clean round the clutch cable-holder thing, see if there are any signs of cracks or stretching. As long as the weld is good (I wouldn't know a good weld from a kick in the nuts, but looking tidy often counts for a lot!) I can't see a problem.

Also, whats this bit of plastic for ? The keys are there to give a guide as to the size of it, I know what keys do :)

Has it a hatched pattern somewhere? That looks like the bit of plastic that goes over the bearing end of the swingarm. I assume it is a cr*pstopper. If it is the bit I think it is (and I'm not uncovering my bike to check!) it should be liveable without, but it was put there for a reason...

That bit of plastic is the OEM rear mud guard, which sits on the swing arm for protecting the rear shock of road carp. If you have a rear hugger on your bike then you won't know where it fits, as the rear hugger will have taken its place.

could be anything really, could even be that the chains snapped and taken it out. If it works leave it well alone imo!

If you're unhappy with the casing, I *think* I've got a spare one lying around in the garage. But eh, tbh, I think that's going to hold up fine - it's not like it's a high-stress part.

I think your right, had a better look around the back of the bike today after I took all the luggage "stuff" off, and found underneath the 96 layers of filth, crud, grease, oil, and general crap, that the wheel, rear mudguard, and undertray all have bits that look like someones went over them with an angle grinder, so the chain has probably snapped at some point and done all the damage.

And, your right too. I had a look at the top of the front of the swingarm and theres a place for the plastic bit to fit, must have been removed when the bike was lowered so not to foul on the box for the toolkit.

Thanks guys :)

It probably would be fine, but if you have a good silver one I might be interested. Mines has a small section of corrosion on it too so a new cover would sort that too. If not I can just try touching it up.

Get it nice and clean and if you feel like a really long test ride, we are in Somerset! :smt082

Have fun cleaning and polishing then do get it out and ride some miles, they are lovely bikes and have a magical rev range :smt050 especially when just over a tonne! [-X

I intended using it a bit first before faffing with it too much, but wanted to check the TPS, which was well off, before getting to grips with it. Decided to remove the luggage rack things cos its just a 20min job, or so I thought, lol.
Bikes in bits now :( lol

Dont think i`ll be any where near a ton for a loooooong time, lol.
