Re: Bloody foreigners need to learn English

Nothing the wrong with the English skills of many educated Scots. It's nothing to do with any failing of MBK's or anything to do with her being a Scot. It's a consequence of her age and the state of our education system.

Where to put apostrophes should have been covered before the age of 16, at least in the three most simplistic terms of use. Higher English should be covering it in much more detail than that. MBK having studied Higher English should know that there is much more to it than just "company is".

MBK would only have finished her Higher English about 4 years ago, and this is fairly typical of the standard to which English is now taught. English A' level would be no better. We are churning out millions of young adults who despite having specifically studied English, haven't got a full grasp of the language. Imagine the written work of one of MBK's peers, who did not study English, or indeed did not continue past Standard grade or GCSE.

No such word as 'companys'. Perhaps they should call it the Higher Scottish?

singular: company
plural: companies

possessive, belonging to one company: company's
possessive, belonging to more than one comapny: companies'

simples.;)

Corrected for you:)

;) indeed.

I had said it was a damm yank that caused my annoyance. He described my presentation boring with inconsistent spelling. I had to ask him what spelling and he said you keep spelling "license" incorrectly.

Still I gave him a little lesson of noun=licence, verb=license. as in :-

You license the use of a software product by applying a licence.

In a previous life I wrote regional reports for a global company that got reviewed and "standardised" by a central team. I took great delight in changing the spelling back to standard English after they'd messed it up. No matter how many times we told them the UK-based regional management team would throw out the report if it was not written in "local language" they never listened...
