Easiest option would be to mount a camera, and just take the stills from the video :)

Re the OP's question, what about some kind of mount with a remote switch, sort of like what photographers use. Strap/tape/glue/mount the camera to the screen or the tank etc, have a remote switch to take photos and bam, you can do as you please. Could even get one of the cameras with the manipulatable screen for ease of viewing.

dug out my old digi camera, its a bit poo but its quite large so may be able to use it with gloves on. will see. might just not bother as im low on room at the mo

aye unfortunatly im not taking our lass on the back to take photos. its like an expensive camera mount that cry's at you when you go too fast :)
