They are very handy indeed, a flare nut spanner will never be as strong as a full ring spanner, but to compensate they're usually rather thicker and heavier, which is both good and bad, good as they're bit stronger that way, bad as they won't access as many fixings. They're sometimes referred to as 'brake nut spanners'.

aye, VERY handy indeed! I got out today and found what I needed. nice tools, 'Craftsman' brand (sold here by Sears, a big chain with only moderate quality in general, but very good tools). lovely, beefy, hefty - 80 grams vs 47g for the stock 10mm wrench; 10mm depth to the jaws, vs only 4 mm for the stocker.

backed out the 8mm bolt holding the block to the frame to get a little room to work, took the burrs off the nut with a tiny triangular file, gave the nut a sharp rap with a punch and hammer, slipped the new wrench on, held the block with an adjustable crescent wrench, and... presto, loosened like magic! I'm in business!
