Welcome the electronic age... bloody pathetic. Banks have OCR at the tills and could easily clear that cheque in in ohhhh let me see (checks SLA for ATM response times) 5 seconds? They choose not to as they can have this 'lost money' sloshing around helping to keep them solvent.
