As shock shaft moves into shock it displaces oil, inside reservoir is floating piston with nitrogen behind it. Shaft pushes oil through comp adjuster on reservoir, which can be used to add some compression damping, and oil then moves piston a bit to allow for difference in volume.
Stock just has bubble of nitrogen inside, no piston, so oil froths up and does what it wants.
