the loose bits have all finally fallen off and stopped flapping around

An empty bottle won't cause a vacuum leak due to the seals in the oiler system. However, I have had a split tube to the inlet take off which will cause a vacuum leak!

It's been vibrating for over a year, but refilling the scottoiler after two weeks fixes it? Nah, the Scottoiler is a Red Herring.

Is it still running smooth three days later?

Exactly my thoughts Ralph.

Yes, it is still smoother. Can't remember if I already said in the OP, however it was never a 'rolling' vibration and could be felt when stationary.

It's really intrigued me, I'm not complaining, but just don't understand what may have changed (other than bits falling off lol).
