Isn`t Yellow the first colour that the human eye/brain recognises ? , without reading the article as my attention span .......... mmm Coffee

Well, don't know about anyone else, seems to be working for others posted in the thread, but this illusion is not very good for me. Took a minute or so to get this to work, but my wife says the yellow dots disappear entirely for a second or so at a time and she only looked at it for 10-20 seconds.

For me the yellow dots kind of fade slightly or go out of focus, and they do kind of flicker momentarily, but if that happens I can't help but my eyes sense the difference in my peripheral vision, and my focus kind of instinctively flicks back to the yellow dots (which of course are still there). It's feels like my eyes do the same as they would when something moves in your peripheral vision, so you instinctively look at it. I have to really stare at the green dot intently and purposely, concentrating on ignoring the yellow dots, in order to get this to work, and for them to disappear completely.

I just read the link Phi-Dan posted. The gorilla video has only half worked for me as well. I didn't see the gorilla initially, but when it turned to face the camera and beat it's fists on it's chest, my focus switched to the gorilla I and lost count of the number of balls being passed (though I found I was counting bounces and passes, not just passes). You don't see the gorilla initially because it's a black humanoid object moving on screen, and you are watching and counting the white humanoids.

all these illusions is why you should not wear camouflage clothing while riding a motorcycle. no mater what colour it is, its the pattern that makes you invisible to a glance.

I dont understand this surely you can override the urge to glance, do you flinch easily? Were you ever hit in the side of the head by someone/something which came from your periferal? Seems odd that you cant beat the urge to look. Infact Im more intreaged by you saying that than I am the illusion itself lol.
FYI I saw the gorilla instantly, dont think I would have done if his movement had been similar to the players but as he swaggered into shot it gave him away instantly... I did loose count though.

Yes, I said I can, but I have to do it on purpose. The illusion doesn't work just my looking at the central dot, I have to STARE at it.

As a child, regularly, with my old man you never saw a thick ear coming :lol:

It's not a concious urge (and I can beat it), it's an automatic reflex, something in you peripheral vision moves or changes that you are not expecting, you look at it.

It usually takes me ages to see these kind of optical illusions, whereas other people see it straight away, like the picture where Jesus appears I need to stare at it intently for ages.

The bit of the eye test where they cover one eye and ask you to stare at a finger, and then bring the pen in from the side, the optician has on occasion commented that I have quite a wide visual field, and sometimes when they do the same and put patterns on the wall and ask you to tell them what colours you see, or what side of a dot a line appears on, it takes a few tries to get them to work as they should.

I also when learning to drive kept getting b0ll0cked by my driving instructor for not checking my mirrors when I had checked them, I eventually got quite annoyed with him for it and resorted to telling him every time I checked my mirror what make, model and colour of car was behind me. After that he believed me, but told me to make a concious effort to move my head and exaggerate my mirror checks, otherwise I was going to fail my test because of it.
