I am on 240 miles now, I was told by Rob Willsher to run it in keeping it below 6000 revs, which is a 1000 more than the book. I have generally kept to this, only when overtaking have i gone above this figure...so only for short bursts....should'nt do any harm, only aid in the running in of the components.

(cos we all know black is the fastest)

240 miles is more than enough. Give it some nuts boy! Go on, you know ya wanna!

If you don't give it a bit of a trashing you're likely glaze the pistons to some degree and never have the full performance possible (your bike will probably consume more oil too). Today's engines are made to very fine tolerances and the running in procedures of yesteryear are no longer necessary. This was backed up (apart from Motoman) by an in-depth article in Bike magazine (I think) a few months back who agreed entirely.

Your bike, your choice.

 I think on some of my longer overtakes i have been up to at least 8000 rpm... (all this changing gear malarki when your overtaking is bliming dangerous) :D

I didn't thash my bike (well apart from the blip down the motorway in the first 8 miles!) but I did use all rev's. This involved me using all the rev range as normal but just taking it easy on the bike, no thashing it just slowly winding on the power as the bike warmed up. I did try to keep it way from the high rev's early on. Once I gone past a 100 miles I'd start giving alittle bit more ummph, then a bit more at 200 and so on. None of the garages ever said anything and I've not had any problems with the engine, the closest problem I've had is the carbs going out of balance at about 18,000 miles. I even had a guy that did some work on it say how well it ran, nice smooth power all though the rev range.

Thanks guys...making me feel a bit better about going over the recommended 5000 every so often...at least now I wont feel so guilty when I have to thrash it a bit to get past idiots on the road. :D

Well, in that article IIRC the only example they actually gave was one of the older 'Blades, and even then they admitted that it was an exaggerated case... (supposed to have made up to 6bhp difference from one bike to the next)

Left the dealer, warmed it to full temp, then commenced to a half hour of thrashing.
